A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Khanbogd Soum of Umnugovi Province, marking the official start of construction of a new meat processing plant.
The total investment for the project is MNT 18.5 billion, fully funded by Oyu Tolgoi. The plant is designed to process up to 10 head of large livestock (cattle, horses and camels) and 100 head of small livestock (sheep and goats) per day. It will include modern processing facilities, a cold storage warehouse with a capacity of 100 tonnes, and a wastewater treatment system. The plant will be equipped with modern technology and will meet all hygiene, food safety, and production standards, serving as a model facility for the region.
The plant will be owned and operated by the “Galbiin Goviin Torgon Sureg” Cooperative, which has open membership for all herders in Khanbogd Soum. After construction is completed, the facility will be handed over to the cooperative, which will take full responsibility for its management, operations, and business activities.
Once operational, the plant will enable the regular purchase of livestock from local herders at fair market prices. It will supply safe, high quality meat products to meet the needs of the growing local population and create opportunities for medium and long term exports. The project will also help address key challenges in the livestock sector, including seasonal production, limited storage capacity, and low value addition.
The project is being implemented jointly by the Khanbogd Soum Governor’s Office, sectoral relevant organisations, and the herders’ cooperative within the framework of public private and social partnership. Construction is being carried out by Tavan Ord LLC, with completion scheduled for April 2027.
