Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia is a copper-gold mine consisting of an open pit mine and underground development, processing plant and supporting infrastructure to produce high grade copper and gold concentrates. Oyu Tolgoi will utilise a Mongolian workforce that will be trained to effectively operate and maintain the processing plant. Oyu Tolgoi’s workforce is more than 94 per cent Mongolian.

The opportunity

We are looking for one (1) Supervisor Welder in the Open Pit department based at Oyu Tolgoi minewith the roster of 14 days on and 7 days off.

Reporting to the Open Pit Maintenance Superintendent Fabrication “ Welding “, the primary purpose of the Welding Supervisor is to assist in the development, direction, and coordination of welding / fabrication activities in accordance with the maintenance plan and business needs to achieve delivery of a high standard of work.

What the role entails

Responsible for the daily administration and supervision of the execution of welding maintenance activities within the Critical Production Work Shop and field maintenance area. Provides leadership, direction, and coordination of a balance between production and sound equipment asset management. Is responsible and accountable for implementation and compliance with Rio Tinto Asset Management and OT Maintenance Systems. Manages welding maintenance on a large fleet of equipment to include: Komatsu 930E haul trucks, Atlas Copco 351 blast hole drills, Caterpillar 7495 rope shovels, Caterpillar 6060 hydraulic shovels and other various support equipment. Will give training and guidance to Mongolian Nationals for welding maintenance procedures and the safe practices of repairing this equipment. This position is intended to train the incumbent in needed skill set to assume Supervisor role in the future.

  • Actively promote a safety culture with all team members by ensuring that JHAs, Tracks & CRM are completed before the commencement of any tasks.
  • Participate in one safety meeting per rotation.
  • Provide visible and felt safety leadership
  • Assist in developing a safety culture whilst ensuring that all work undertaken in areas of responsibility comply with existing safety legislation and is in full compliance with applicable HSE standards.
  • Ensure safety standards, processes and procedures are in place and adhered to for the Open Pit Maintenance
  • Ensure the safety of all team members and that risks are identified, mitigated and managed


  • Ensure that all welding / fabrication work is carried out to the highest standard.
  • Complete tasks on the maintenance schedule as per the weekly plan
  • Reinforce QA / QC initiatives to reduce the occurrence of rework.
  • Ensure that housekeeping standards do not deteriorate regardless of the workflow.
  • Attend all PSI meetings and encourage buy in from all team members.
  • Follow up on all accidents / incidents and report them to the Superintendent Fabrication immediately.
  • Ensure that returned work orders are descriptive and that all available information is supplied.
  • Carry out a comprehensive verbal and written shift handover with the incoming shift supervisor.
  • Mentor apprentices by displaying leadership & guidance so that a safety & best practices culture is imbedded at an early stage.
  • Respond to unplanned work that is copper critical as a priority by acting with a sense of urgency.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of maintenance KPIs applicable to your work area.
  • Carry out all tasks as requested by your Superintendent Fabrication
  • Support the daily activities of Open Pit Maintenance
  • Assist in the implementation of Operations Strategy, long and short term operation plans for the Open Pit Maintenance
  • Assist in identifying risks and working to ensure risk mitigation strategies are put in place to ensure a operation
  • Continuously identify and implement opportunities to improve the performance of Open Pit Maintenance


  • Provide strong and effective leadership to direct and indirect team members.


  • Meets Work Schedule (Welding and Fabrication)
  • Participates and shares safety awareness in pre- start meetings
  • Adheres to practice and procedures, promoting improved practice where applicable
  • Applies self to quality workmanship, free from defects, minimizing waste
  • Assists design and displays awareness of engineering standards with completed work
  • Takes part in monthly Safety Meetings
  • Complete all tasks as requested by his/her immediate leader ,or whoever has his/her delegated authority
  • Initiate, develop and maintain effective and sustainable relationships with external stakeholders

What you will need for this role

  • Degree or Relevant Experience in Comparable Roles
  • Welding Certifications
  • More than 5 years’ experience in the welding / fabrication industry, mining experience will be well received.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards
  • Continuous Improvement and Leadership skills
