The opportunity

We are looking for one ( 1) Superintendent Geotechnical in Oyu Tolgoi LLC – Technical & Integrated Planning - Mine Technical Services department based at Oyu Tolgoi mine site 7 days on, 7 days off and Ulaanbaatar office 5 days on and 2 days off with 50/50 roster.

The primary purpose of this role involves: identifying and developing key outcomes for the geotechnical team; ensuring personal development plans are created for geotechnical team members in order to maximise development opportunities; management of contractors and consultants; identifying and implementing geotechnical best practices; managing all HSE activities; facilitating change by understanding the principles and impact of that change and acting accordingly.

What the role entails

  • Meeting all compliance, legislative and regulatory requirements, particularly the Ro Tinto D3 Management Standard.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety standards and procedures. Managing all HSE related activities by anticipating current and future risks, and setting and monitoring objectives to ensure standards are met.
  • Managing athe behaviour, performance and development of the geotechnical team. Ensuring personal development plans are created for geotechnical team members to enable diverse learning opportunities.
  • Contractor and consultant management through the supervision of drilling campaigns, feasibility studies and project work.
  • Acquisition, synthesis, interpretation and modelling of geotechnical and monitoring data in order to accurately understand the rock mass and its response to mining (for purposes of excavation stability, mine design optimisation and operational performance).
  • Conducting rock mass assessments/stability assessments for incorporation into mine design and planning.
  • Develop and maintain a Slope Management Plan and Dump and Stockpile Management Plan.
  • Implement operating procedures for all geotechnical activities and quality assurance/quality control practices.
  • Provide geotechnical input to blast design to minimise blast damage.
  • Implement timely systems and processes that regularly monitor the triggers of major geotechnical hazards.
  • Keeping abreast of developments within the field of rock mechanics/geotechnical engineering and utilising this information to facilitate the ongoing development of the team, geotechnical best practice, and mining outcomes.

What you will need for this role

  • Bachelor degree in Geotechnical, Geology and Mining
  • Minimum of 10 years of mining experience
  • Membership of professional geological and/or mining society, such as; International Society of Rock Mechanics, SME, SEG, IMM, AusIMM etc.
  • Good data analysis skills
  • Good computer skills including proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel and Office suite
  • Experience with mining and geological software packages (Vulcan, MineSight, Leapfrog, Rocscience tool or other mining software) preferred
  • English competency (both written and oral) is essential.
  • Strong demonstrated commitment to safety
  • Must be able to demonstrate problem solving skills, project management skills and familiarity with continuous improvement tools
