The opportunity

We are looking for one (1) Superintendent Biodiversity in our Environment and Biodiversity department based at Oyu Tolgoi mine with roster of 14 days on and 7 days off.

The primary purpose of this role is to provide management and oversight on the biodiversity team and various Consultants and Contractors that will be researching and implementing biodiversity related projects on behalf of the Oyu Tolgoi.

Liaison with government regulators and departments to ensure the biodiversity research work being undertaken by OT is aligned to government requirements and plans. Liaison with project bank lenders, other biodiversity related non-government organisations and stakeholders is required in order to ensure that biodiversity monitoring and offset management plans are aligned and strategically coordinated.

What the role entails

  • Biodiversity Contract Management – Responsible for the implementation, management and coordination of biodiversity organization contracts implemented by the Environment & Biodiversity Team in support of biodiversity baseline understanding, biodiversity monitoring and evaluation, impact assessments, implementation of mitigations and measurement of residual impacts and development of biodiversity offset programmes.
  • Coordination and Liaison – Responsible for ensuring that all biodiversity related work is coordinated and liaised with other functional groups of the Oyu Tolgoi Environment & Biodiversity Team, other Oyu Tolgoi operational and construction departments, involved Rio Tinto specialists and partners, involved Government ministries and authorities and involved Consultants and Contractors and bank lender representatives.
  • Provision of Specialized Biodiversity Advice – Responsible for ensuring that clear and well-founded biodiversity advice is provided to the Environment & Biodiversity Team staff members in charge of construction and operations environmental management.

What you will need for this role

  • Relevant Tertiary qualifications essential.
  • 5-10 years (or more) of relevant (including international) experience in Biodiversity Management, preferably with demonstrated practical experience in the extractive industry or with other relevant practical experience;
  • Demonstrable and practical experience in the following: design and implementation of biodiversity offsets; biodiversity monitoring and evaluation; and the management of biodiversity programs of large scale and complexity.
  • Proficient in English, both oral and written.
  • Excellent communication and negotiations skills
  • Experience in liaising with government agencies (national and local);
  • Contract development and management;
  • Demonstrated knowledge in Mongolian laws and regulations
  • Preferably with demonstrated team and/or people management skills;
