Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia is a copper-gold mine consisting of an open pit mine and underground development, processing plant and supporting infrastructure to produce high grade copper and gold concentrates. Oyu Tolgoi will utilise a Mongolian workforce that will be trained to effectively operate and maintain the processing plant. Oyu Tolgoi's workforce is more than 94 per cent Mongolian.

The opportunity

We are looking for one (1) Specialist Welding in the Concentrator Maintenance department based atOyu Tolgoi mine with the roster of 14 days on and 7 days off.

The purpose of the Specialist Welding's position is to provide professional leadership and direction for the Concentrator welding support team through the use of world class practices. The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate and communicate health, safety, and environmental activities and expectations, production, maintenance, technical, administrative, safety and other plant needs to effectively meet the OT Mine asset management and administrative goals. This role will take over direct Supervision of Critical Production welding teams in absence of supervisor and assume all supervisor duties when fully trained. Functionally works with peers, clarifies work assignments, maintains quality of work, strives for continuous improvement ,meets schedules, maintains equipment to working order, participates in training and provides own input on performance reviews, while adhering to Policies and Procedures.

What the role entails

  • Ensures work environment is safe at all times, Stopping any unsafe job, making safe, reporting and continuing
  • Complete all tasks as requested by his/her immediate leader ,or whoever has his/her delegated authority
  • Takes part in monthly Safety Meetings
  • Assists design and displays awareness of engineering standards with completed work
  • Applies self to quality workmanship, free from defects, minimizing waste
  • Adheres to practice and procedures, promoting improved practice where applicable
  • Participates and shares safety awareness in pre- start meetings
  • Meets Work Schedules (Welding and Fabrication)
  • Manages welding maintenance on large Concentrator equipment. Gives training and guidance to Mongolian Nationals for welding maintenance procedures and the safe practices of repairing this equipment.
  • Responsible for the daily administration and supervision of the execution of welding maintenance activities within the Critical Production Work Shop and field maintenance area. Provides leadership, direction, and coordination of a balance between production and sound equipment asset management. Accountable for implementation and compliance with Rio Tinto Asset Management and OT Maintenance Systems.
  • Fault finding in welding equipment evidenced with pre-start checks
  • Workmanship testing of weld integrity and meeting plan, function within engineering requirements
  • Allocation of time for completion of all tasks in timely manner – preparation of work area, gathering of materials, use of equipment.
  • Providing solutions to unique workplace requirements, sharing ideas and promoting with use of drawings, prototype and techniques to meet business needs

What you will need for this role

  • Must have obtained appropriate welding certifications
  • Relevant experience ( 5years minimum)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and self-motivated
  • Good teamwork skill
  • Good communication skill
  • Ability to handle intense workload and meet deadlines
  • Good English is preferred
  • An understanding of Materials and their behaviour during welding

Desirable requirements

  • Have all various types of welding knowledge and skills
  • Ability to isolate and repair equipment
  • To ability to use appropriate hand and power tools applicable trade
  • Perform full positional pipe and plate welding
  • Must be able to read and understand drawings and assembly
  • Must have a total Awareness and Commitment to Safety, Health and Environmental Requirement
  • Must have appropriate operators Licenses
  • Must abide by Zero tolerance alcohol Regulation
  • Experience in a relevant workshop and plant environment
  • Mining, Construction or Heavy Industry experience
  • Equipment workshop where interpretation of drawings and fabrication/assembly of material goods
  • Demonstrate an ability to train others
  • Repair to pipework, integrity of vessels and finishing goods using hand tools
