Supplier provides jobs and skills training for Mongolian nationals
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (ot.mn) – Sandvik Mongolia entered into an asset service agreement with Oyu Tolgoi this year to provide 12 hours/7 days of service and maintenance works to Shaft 1. With a vision of going to 24 hours/7 of days technical support coverage in the near future, Sandvik Mongolia is going to increase their Mongolian work force in 2012 in order to support the larger work hour coverage.
Since the end of 2008, Oyu Tolgoi has been working with Sandvik Mongolia LLC. The group was awarded a contract to supply the project with underground drilling machines, trucks and loaders along with world class service and Sandvik genuine spare parts and tools.
Oyu Tolgoi has made many commitments regarding supplier partnerships and development within Mongolia. The Mongolia First Initiative is the company’s corporate programme to identify and develop local companies in order to be competitive in the new business environments emerging in Mongolia. In addition to this, Oyu Tolgoi supports suppliers hiring and training Mongolian nationals to work on the project.
Sandvik is a high-technology, engineering group with advanced products and a world leader within selected areas - tools for metal cutting, equipment and tools for the mining and construction industries, stainless materials, special alloys, metallic and ceramic resistance material as well as project systems. The company has utilised its international network to provide training to employees. To date, 18 employees have taken part in overseas training conducted in Sandvik offices in the United States, Finland, Kazakhstan, Russia, Korea, China and the Sandvik Finance Academy in Sweden.
The sessions offered include a wide selection of topics. Employees have had the opportunity to take part in training topic which includied equipment servicing, HR tools, Environmental, Health and Safety issues, international financial reporting standards, IT and anti-trust law.
The training equips our employees with the skills necessary to carry on their duties, contributes significantly to their professional development and boosts their confidence at work. Attending the training in Sandvik offices abroad also provides a great opportunity for Mongolian employees to network with colleagues they work with everyday via email and phone but never have a chance to meet face to face.
Sandvik Mongolia LLC was established in 2007 as part of Sandvik Mining and Construction (SMC). Eighty per cent (80%) of Sandvik Mongolia’s workforce is Mongolian. With the expected extension to full-time service, Sandvik Mongolia is expecting to hire more service engineers, technicians and possibly trainees in 2012.
