Melissa Shanjengange was appointed as a General Manager People and Organization of Oyu Tolgoi in September 2020.
She worked for Rio Tinto for over 9 years and before joining Oyu Tolgoi she was in the role of General Manager – HR Copper Americas with accountability HR Operations for Kennecott, Resolution. She was also the HRBP for the MD Operations Copper & Diamonds.
Melissa originally joined Rio Tinto in Namibia with Energy & Minerals and was involved with external affairs, media, internal communications and HSE.
Prior to this, She worked for diamond mining companies in Namibia, Botswana & South Africa. She served on the boards of the Namibia Training Authority, The Namibia Qualifications Authority as well as the Development Fund of Namibia. She also served as the Director of Remuneration & HR Committee for EBH Namibia and Director of the Utah Foundation. Melissa was directly involved with initiating and implementing the Parental Leave policy in the USA for Rio Tinto employees.
Melissa is from Namibia and has a degree in Social Sciences from the University of the Western Cape as well as many other certificates in Management, Training & Development, and Labor Relations Law. She is fluent in 3 languages.
