The opportunity

We are looking for one (1) Manager, Power Commercial in Oyu Tolgoi Finance and Commerce department based at Ulaanbaatar with occasional travel to the Oyu Tolgoi mine site.

The role of the Manager, Power Commercial is focused on overseeing the commercial aspects of OT's power supply, particularly in coordination with the Chinese power supplier and the Government of Mongolia (GoM). This involves managing relationships and negotiations with the Chinese power supplier according to the terms of the existing agreement. Additionally, it entails collaborating with key entities within the GoM, such as the Ministry of Energy (MoE) and other energy agencies, to address issues related to OT's current power supply.

It's important to note that this role does not involve oversight of domestic energy source development, including large-scale renewable energy generation. However, the Manager, Power Commercial will need to closely collaborate with the OT decarbonization team, likely to ensure alignment of strategies and initiatives related to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources.

The primary responsibilities of the Manager, Power Commercial revolve around managing the commercial aspects of OT's power supply, liaising with the Chinese power supplier and the GoM, and collaborating with internal teams, particularly the OT decarbonization team, to support broader sustainability goals.

What the role entails

The role of the Manager, Power Commercial encompasses several key responsibilities and tasks:

  • Lead and maintain the commercial aspects of the imported power supply arrangements under its current terms.
  • Develop and maintain the relationships with key stakeholders, including GoM officials, JV partners, international financial institutions, and other commercial parties.
  • Closely cooperate with OT site infrastructure team for current power supply reliability and with Project Development Office for new power supply projects.
  • Provide timely updates to OT decarbonization team.
  • Commercial principles including NPV, real versus nominal, discount rates etc

Overall, the Manager, Power Commercial plays a critical role in ensuring the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of OT's power supply operations through effective management of commercial aspects and collaboration with key stakeholders.

What you will need for this role

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Finance, Business, Law, Marketing, with a technical background in electrical engineering considered advantageous. An MBA would be a significant plus.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience, typically achieved through graduate qualifications.
  • Proven track record of leading negotiations for complex commercial agreements.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing relationships with diverse stakeholders, particularly those with misaligned objectives.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and management skills.
  • Proficiency in sound financial management and quality control practices.
  • Strong analytical mindset with creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to develop high-quality reports and presentations to facilitate decision-making by management.
  • Proficient in data analysis and communication of insights in a clear and concise manner.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both Mongolian and English, essential for effective communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Fluency in Chinese language would be highly advantageous, given the nature of the role and engagement with Chinese power suppliers.
