The opportunity

We are looking for one (1) Specialist Fauna Research in our Environment and Biodiversity department based at the Oyu Tolgoi mine with a roster of 14 days on and 7 days off.

The primary purpose of the Specialist Fauna Research is to provide direct management and oversight to the biodiversity team and coordination with the various consultants and contractors that will be contributing to the research and implementing biodiversity and ecology (especially fauna and habitat) related projects on behalf of the Oyu Tolgoi HSESC - Biodiversity team.

In addition, the Specialist Fauna Research will provide direct biodiversity advice and guidance to the environment team members on carrying out construction, operation, and mining environmental management at the Oyu Tolgoi site.

What the role entails

  • Fauna Team Leader - Responsible for the daily supervision and guidance of the HSESC - Biodiversity team’s Fauna and Ecology research functions
  • Fauna and other Biodiversity Contract Management – Responsible for the implementation, management, and coordination of biodiversity contracts implemented by the HSESC - Biodiversity team in support of biodiversity baseline understanding, biodiversity monitoring and data accumulation, and impact assessment and input into biodiversity offset programmes.
  • Managing Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) and the Biodiversity Monitoring and Evaluation Plan (BMEP)– Responsible for developing, assessing, and reviewing the OT BMP and the BMEP, in regards to Fauna aspects. The BMP and its implementation will need to be closely aligned with diverse OT plans and programs and the BMEP
  • Special Protected Area (SPA) engagement Responsible for management and coordination of organizations developing mechanisms and programs to support and improve conservation at the local level, national level Special Protected areas, and internationally recognized sensitive areas of biodiversity conservation (e.g., IBA and IPA).
  • Coordination and Liaison – Responsible for ensuring that all biodiversity-related work is coordinated and liaised with other functional groups of Oyu Tolgoi HSESC - Environment teams, other Oyu Tolgoi operational and construction departments, involved Rio Tinto specialists and partners, involved Government ministries and authorities, and involved consultants and contractors.
  • Provision of Specialized Fauna Advice – Responsible for ensuring that clear and well-founded fauna advice is provided to the Biodiversity team members in charge of construction and operation.

What you will need for this role:

  • University degree in wildlife management, conservation biology and/or relevant field ;
  • 5 years relevant experience in Environmental Management and Biodiversity Programme Implementation;
  • Relevant experience in the field of fauna research methodology;
  • Knowledge in Mongolian laws & relevant international Laws and Standards, permitting;
  • Implementation of Environmental Management Systems (Best Practice);
  • Advanced English language (both oral and written) knowledge;
