The opportunity

We are looking for one (1) Superintendent Analytical Services in our Concentrator department based at Oyu Tolgoi mine with roster of 14 days on and 7 days off.

The Analytical Services team is part of provides analytical related services to mine and concentrator, technical assistance, primarily, within the concentrator business unit at the mine to maximize productivity, efficiency and effectiveness in the operation of the concentrator process plant in compliance with HSE requirements. The teams within the department address challenges, identify opportunities, develop strategies, establish best practices, lead capability development and implement programs and/or projects to continually improve the performance of the Concentrator.

The Superintendent Analytical service is primarily responsible for providing leadership, technical assistance and co-ordination in the sales related activities of the Concentrator business units of Oyu Tolgoi.

The role responsible for supervision and technical support for the onsite analytical laboratory operation meeting with the demands of internal and external customers on time with accuracy, precision and reliable operation, accountable for smooth functioning of laboratory.

What the role entails

Safety (10%):

  • Accountable for Zero harm and make sure safe work place and safe practices for self and others
  • Accountable, within the laboratory, that all site-wide & lab safety policies, procedures & protocols are followed, and strictly adhered to.
  • Promoting safety culture, IIF-Incident and Injury Free, LIF-Leadership in the field, programs within the work group

Environmental (10%):

  • Accountable, within the laboratory, that all site-wide & lab environmental policies, procedures & protocols are followed, and strictly adhered to.
  • Accountable for ensuring that junior staff are trained in environmental emergency procedures & protocol

Quality Assurance (30%): Analytical Lab, Bagging Plant Lab and other Concentrate related labs

  • Accountable for indirect supervision of 5-6 supervisors from onsite SGS geochemistry, SGS inspection and CGL inspection laboratory team, and direct working relationship with onsite managers of these labs. Direct supervision of 2 analytical metallurgists.
  • Accountable for 60-70 on site lab staffs for the compliance with OT & RT HSE requirements, and quality of work on sampling, sample preparation, fire assay, wet chemistry and any type of instrument analysis
  • Accountable for ensuring that sampling, sample preparation & analysis are performed in accordance with approved and suitable methods, procedures & protocols;
  • Accountable for ensuring that all laboratory glassware, equipment & instrument are calibrated and certified where appropriate;
  • Accountable for ensuring that all junior staff understand the Laboratory Quality Assurance systems, Laboratory analytical related procedures & protocols;
  • Accountable for ensuring that Laboratory quality related problems & short-comings are identified and remedied; thus ensure continuous improvement in place;
  • Accountable to make sure laboratory operation follow the guidelines ISO 17025;
  • Accountable to make sure laboratory participation on round robin, internal and external QA/QC for continual improvement;
  • Accountable to produce QA/QC charts/reports using appropriate statistical tools.

Laboratory Operations (20%): Analytical Lab, Bagging Plant Lab and other Concentrate related labs

  • Accountable to ensure the laboratories comply with OT safety, employment, training and other site and government related compliances;
  • Accountable for ensuring that all laboratory machines, test instruments & other laboratory equipment & glassware are properly maintained to obtain the best availability;
  • Accountable to make sure proper calibrating & troubleshooting of all analytical instrument & equipment within the laboratories;
  • Accountable for ensuring lab stock of chemicals, glassware & other consumables stock levels are maintained;
  • Accountable for ensuring all analytical results & reports are reported in a timely manner with accuracy and precision;
  • Accountable for contractor management, ensure all staffs OT and contractors are properly trained & developed;
  • Accountable in ensuring routine departmental reports are developed, documented & maintained time to time;
  • Accountable in managing short term & long term issues, plans & goals for laboratory.

Sales Concentrate Management (30%):

  • Accountable for management of concentrate blending, quality control and inventory of sales concentrate at the Concentrate Barns and Bagging Plant;
  • Accountable for developing and maintaining sales copper concentrate management systems for the Concentrator department in co-operation with concentrator, sales and logistics, and various governmental bodies;
  • Accountable for laboratory contractor management;
  • Liaising with various stakeholders which including OT Finance, OT Procurement, OT Permitting; and various OT/Customer appointed third party inspection, quality testing and governmental agencies;
  • Occasionally required, travel to the international borders crossing and customer’s smelter locations for WSMD technical inspections, evaluations and technical support;
  • Accountable for accurate and timely up-keep of databases and software relating to sales concentrate;
  • Accountable for developing and producing timely periodic internal and external reports for sales concentrate related Weighing Sampling Moisture Determination (WSMD), quality controls and analytical results;
  • Accountable for systematic maintenance of quality control and assurances from all on-site sampling, moisture determination and analytical assays;
  • Accountable to coordinate with internal and external customer on assay reconciliation process.

What you will need for this role

  • Bachelor Degree in Chemistry
  • +5 years of work experience in mining industry and/or commercial geochemistry laboratories
  • Competent in English (verbal and written)
  • Competent in Mongolian (verbal and technical writing)
  • Strong communication and good people skills
  • Previous experience working with people from different background
  • Good project management and problem solving skills
  • Comfortable to work in remote areas (Oyu Tolgoi mine) with extended onsite roster
  • Experience in mineral sample preparation and fire assaying
  • Experience in concentrator and/or smelter-refinery associated industries
  • Experience with mineral commodity WSMD and Quality determination
  • Proficient in computer skills such as MS office, statistical tools
  • Oversees degrees and international experience may be considered as advantage
